Let’s get ready for a weekend

A Little Something for the Weekend

You made it. Another week in the books — homework turned in (mostly), lunches packed, drop-offs navigated, and probably a few moments in between where you wondered how you were going to get it all done. You did. 🙌

This weekend looks like a mixed bag weather-wise — highs in the upper 80s Friday and Saturday before some rain rolls in Sunday. 🌧️ Not a bad setup for some outdoor time early, then a slower Sunday to get ready for the week ahead. Whatever your plans are, there's something here for you. 🌿

Something to do together
🎯 Try This: Make a "Family Bucket List Board"

Grab a piece of poster board, a stack of sticky notes, and something to write with. ✏️ Each person in the family — kids included — writes down three to five things they want to do this summer. Could be big (road trip 🚗), could be tiny (eat breakfast for dinner on a Tuesday 🥞).

Stick everything on the board and put it somewhere visible. This isn't a to-do list. There's no pressure to finish it. It's just a way to get everyone talking about what they're actually looking forward to. Kids who feel like they had a say in summer plans tend to be a little more engaged — and a little less bored — when July rolls around. 🌞 Bonus: it's a great conversation starter over the weekend.

Fun fact: kids can lose up to 3 months of learning over summer break. Not-so-fun fact: most parents don't realize it until September.

One Small Organization Win
📋 Sunday Night Prep: Write the Week's Schedule on a Whiteboard

Pick up a small dry-erase board — they're cheap and last forever — and every Sunday, write out the week's key events across the top. 🗓️ Early dismissal Wednesday, soccer Thursday, dentist Friday. Hang it somewhere the whole family passes, like the kitchen or hallway.

Kids who can see the week ahead feel less caught off guard by schedule changes. 😌 And you'll stop answering "Wait, what's happening this week?" five times before Tuesday. Takes about four minutes. Pays off all week.

Game to play together
🎲 Game Night Idea: Wavelength

Wavelength is one of those rare games that's genuinely fun for mixed ages. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 One player gives a one-word clue to help their team guess where a hidden target falls on a spectrum — like "HOT ←——→ COLD" — and the clue might be "lava" 🌋 or it might be "soup" 🍜, depending on where the target is.

It's endlessly funny because you see exactly how differently everyone thinks. 😂 Good for ages 10 and up, plays 2–12, and a round takes about 30–45 minutes. It's also a conversation starter long after the game ends.

What they’re saying
🗣️"Vibe Check"

As in: "That party did not pass the vibe check." 😬

A vibe check is an informal assessment of someone's mood, energy, or attitude in a given moment. If you pass , you're calm, positive, or at ease. If you fail , you're off somehow — anxious, awkward, or giving bad energy. Your kids use this casually and constantly. Now you'll know what just got evaluated. 😄

Trivia for the family
(Answers at the bottom 👇)

🐣 Younger (Ages 5–10): What is the only continent that is also a country? 🌏

🎓 Older (Ages 11+): What percentage of the Earth's water is fresh water? 💧

Things worth knowing
💡 Fun Facts to Share

🔭 Science: A day on Mars is just 37 minutes longer than a day on Earth. Early Mars mission planners thought human sleep schedules would adapt pretty easily. They were wrong. 😅

📖 Language Arts: The word "clue" comes from "clew," which meant a ball of yarn. 🧶 In the Greek myth of the Minotaur, Theseus used a ball of yarn to find his way out of the labyrinth — so following the yarn became following a "clue."

👋 That's It for This Week

Getting to Friday with your kids still fed, still cared for, and still showing up — that's not a small thing. ❤️ It doesn't always feel like enough, but it is. You're doing the invisible work every single day, and most of it doesn't come with a thank you.

Some weekends are full and fun. 🎉 Some are slow and a little messy. Some you're just trying to recharge enough to do it all again Monday. 🔋 All of those count.

Whatever this weekend ends up looking like — hope you find a moment that feels like yours. 🌿

Trivia Answers

🐣 Younger: Australia! 🦘 It is both a continent and a sovereign country — the only one in the world that holds that distinction. It covers nearly 3 million square miles and is home to more unique animal species than almost anywhere else on Earth.

🎓 Older: Only about 2.5% of Earth's water is fresh water 💧 — and most of that is locked in glaciers and ice caps. ❄️ Less than 1% of all the water on the planet is actually accessible for human use as drinking water, irrigation, and sanitation.
